Tip Calculator

How the tip is calculated

Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, and the total is the bill plus the tip.

Example: an €64 bill with an 18% tip gives 64 × 0.18 = €11.52, for a total of €75.52.

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left (€64 → €6.40).
  • 20%: double the 10% (€12.80).
  • 15%: the 10% plus half of it (6.40 + 3.20 = €9.60).
  • 18%: 20% minus 2% (12.80 − 1.28 = €11.52).

Customs change and vary by type of venue, so treat these as general guidance.

Splitting the bill

Calculate the tip on the total, then divide the total by the number of people. For four people sharing the €75.52 above, each pays €18.88. If people ordered very different amounts, it is fairer to split the bill by what each person had and apply the tip percentage to each share.

Before you tip

Check whether a service charge appears on the receipt — paying it twice is a common tourist mistake. When paying by card, ask whether tips added on the card reach the staff; in some places leaving cash is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

In the US, the usual practice is to tip on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply use the total. In countries where prices include tax, there is no difference.

Do you tip in France?

It is optional. A 15% service charge has been included in French restaurant prices since 1987. Rounding up or leaving a few euros for good service is common but not expected.

How much is a 20% tip on $50?

$10, for a total of $60. Take 10% (move the decimal point: $5) and double it.
